Portland Streetcar
The Portland Streetcar emulates the traffics norms of the different Portland neighborhoods it travels through. Manufactured in the Czech Republic, the Portland Streetcars are just over eight feet wide by 65 feet long. Similar in size but significantly smaller than the Portland MAX trains, the Portland Streetcar track system is 12 inches deep which minimized construction time and alterations to loading and unloading stations and platforms. The narrower Portland Streetcar lines can be fitted to the existing grades which limits street and sidewalk reconstruction.
Ridership has more than double over the last three years to just over 9,000 weekday riders. A significant numbers as the city equates those riders to cars off of the road in the Pearl District, NW Portland and downtown Portland's core. With Portland's population expected to double to more than 2,000,000 by 2022, future plans to cross the Willamette River to eastside of Portland will help relieve the addition of cars of Portland's major roads. The Portland Streetcar covers the most active areas of its downtown core. In NW Portland you will pass Legacy's Good Samaritan Hospital and put you in the middle of Nob Hill's shopping district. In downtown you will travel through the middle of Portland State University, Oregon's largest university. You will also make your way down to Portland's newest neighborhood, the South Waterfront, just after passing the growing Riverplace District. And when in the Pearl District, the Portland Streetcar will take you by two of Portland's newest parks, Jamison Square and Tanner Springs Park and the Portland Armory.
